Things Chronically Ill People Are Tired of Hearing

How to support those you love with chronic illness

If you live with chronic illness, you’ve probably heard all of these at least once.

Usually from someone who means well.

But after the hundredth time… it gets old.

“But you don’t look sick.”

Chronic illness doesn’t always have visible symptoms.

A person can look completely fine while dealing with pain, fatigue, or serious medical issues.

“Have you tried yoga?”

Yoga is great.

Yoga does not cure autoimmune diseases.

“Everything happens for a reason.”

Sometimes things happen because bodies are complicated and biology is unfair.

“You’re so strong.”

This one is actually meant kindly.

But sometimes people aren’t being strong by choice.

They’re just doing their best to survive.

“At least it’s not worse.”

Comparing suffering doesn’t make anyone feel better.

Pain is still pain.

Struggles are still struggles.

What People Actually Need

Instead of advice, most people just want:

• Understanding

• Patience

• Someone who listens

Sometimes the most powerful thing you can say is simply:

“I believe you.”
